Ambrose has grown old. He now lives with his dog Oskar in a house in the middle of nowhere, staring at a blank sheet of paper on a drawing table. He is questioning his life, his relationships with people, with his wife Meta. Above all, he questions himself, his career. He has created an enviable body of work and achieved recognition, even fame, most would say he has succeeded. But – does he think so himself?
In the final part of the "bird" trilogy, Gašper Krajnc, in the image of his protagonist, uncompromisingly confronts both the position of the artist in society and the social expectations towards art, while at the same time placing at the centre the man as he is when he is not an artist, when he is "just" an old man, voluntarily condemned to solitude. Winter Birds is a remarkable work that clearly demonstrates a distinct improvement on the first two books, both in terms of content and form, and thus a rich creative potential of the artist. It is safe to say that with this book the author has surpassed himself.
Gašper Krajnc (1985) graduated from the Faculty of Theology, but he now works as an illustrator and cartoonist. He has co-authored two graphic novels as an illustrator, Rite (2016, in English) and Malgaj (2018), and he may be found in two recent anthologies of Slovenian comics, covering the years 2006 to 2016 and 1927 to 2017.
In 2020, VigeVageKnjige published City Birds, his first graphic novel in which he created both the visuals and the text.
The book garnered a lot of positive reviews from both the general public and specialists, and a year later, it was given the Zlatirepec Award for the best Slovenian original graphic novel for adults.
